Paul Daly – How I started as a dog behaviourist

Hi my name is Paul Daly and I have been around dogs and dog training for more years than I care to remember, working as a full time UK dog behaviourist since 2001.

My early childhood memories are of dogs, we had many different breeds over the years ranging from a Border Collie X, Jack Russell, Lurcher, Labrador, German Shepherds to a Red Setter.

When I was a child a dog was a dog, it was treated as a dog and it was respected as such, they never had any behavioural issues and were balanced.

My first real memories of building a bond with a dog outside of our own dogs was with a Rottweiler whose name I do not recall. What I do recall though is how he was nearly as big as me and was the most friendly, softest and most playful dog I had ever met. I spent hours with this dog, learning how to play and learning his language it was I think the real turning point for me and that encounter with him changed me forever.

As the years passed my passion for dogs grew and as I was born a country boy it was the working breeds that took my heart first. Lurchers, Whippets, Spaniels, Terriers, Labradors ect. It was with the sporting and working breeds that I started to build my training business as a Field Sport Trainer.

The world of field sports has its limitations, so it was when Ziggy my little Staffordshire Bull Terrier X Cocker Spaniel entered my world that I saw another side to training in the form of behaviour work.

Ziggy had his own set of issues and although he had never been socialised he instantly bonded with my Whippet Kenny and they became the best of friends. Over the coming weeks I was told by many people including the Vets that I was mad to take on such a dog, he will break you as he was so hyper and unbalanced.

I realised I had taken this dog for a reason and it was not just to get him out of that home. The instant I saw him I needed to help him and I knew he was going to help me. This was the primal bond between human and dog and I felt it so strong, more than any dog I had ever worked with before. He was my driving force in entering the dog behavioural arena.

From that point my life changed, the work I put in with Ziggy gave me the foundation and the knowledge I needed. I realised then, for me to truly fulfil my life and his I had to use the knowledge he had given me to help others. That’s when the Canine Coaching behavioural side was born and I have never looked backed.
